Since 1990, Joseph Y. Avrahamy has done what most lawyers never do: win for plaintiffs and defend for businesses — in the same kinds of cases.
A graduate of Loyola Law School, Mr. Avrahamy began his career representing consumers and injured people from his office in Encino — auto and motorcycle collisions, wrongful death, and medical malpractice. In his third year of law school, he clerked for a judge who went on to sit on Israel’s Supreme Court.
He built his reputation on the cases other attorneys rejected. Three police officers turned away by numerous lawyers brought him a civil rights case against the City of Los Angeles; after a three-week federal trial, a unanimous jury returned $15,000,003 in under two hours — one of the largest verdicts ever against the City. That work led to the $20.5 million Rampart global settlement, approved by the L.A. City Council and covered by the Los Angeles Times.
For the past twenty years he has also served as corporate counsel — defending employers in employment lawsuits, businesses in commercial disputes, and a residential landlord with more than 5,000 units across greater Los Angeles, in breach-of-habitability litigation.
